Never a Dull Day

29 Aug

I thought I was nearing the end of my road trip when I found out that parts of El Portal was being evacuated due to a forest fire in nearby Moss Canyon. There are all sorts of scary what-if scenarios that run through your head when you hear this sort of news and, unless you are a fire fighter, very little that you can do to prevent any of them. I spent about four hours glued to my computer ready to pounce on any new information, but nothing new appeared. At the time that I’m writing this, I still know very little that I didn’t know when I first found out about it.

My options were as follows:

A. Go to Mariposa and sit around and worry.
B. Go to April’s apartment in Orange County and sit around and worry.
C. ?????

I do not have a red card, and I have no practical knowledge of coordinating evacuations. After spending half of a day trying to make sense of it all I realized that I can’t. I will go crazy if I sit around and worry about all the “what-if’s.” So I’ve directed my car towards the coast, to an area that is supposed to have good camping, and I’m going to try to chill out. I won’t pretend that I’m not the slightest bit on edge right now, but I am certain that the fire fighters are doing everything they can, that whoever is in charge will let us know what we need to know when we need to know it, and that if the worst happens the stuff that I have in my house is just that….stuff.

Hopefully, I’ll soon be able to return to a town that hasn’t changed (aside from having a few more great stories to recklessly exaggerate,) and I’ll be able to share my road trip adventures. In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed for us.
