FTW Wednesday: Medical Billing Codes

14 Sep

Medical billing codes.  There are not many more snooze-inducing series of words than that, but here I am featuring them in a FTW Wednesday.  Just be patient with me while we get to the win.  Yesterday I was listening to NPR on my way home from work and, yes, I am aware that doesn’t contribute to my assertions that this will end up interesting.  They were talking about changes taking place in the medical billing industry, but what caught my attention were the completely insane types of things they have codes for.  In the segment, the interviewee mentions her favorite: V91.07xa, Burn due to water skis on fire.

Yeah, shit just got real.

So for this Wednesday’s post of awesomeness, I thought I’d look up some other interesting possibilities for injury straight from the ICD10CM.  I’ll just let you wonder what circumstances lead to the inclusion of these scenarios.

  • Slipping, tripping and stumbling, without falling, due to stepping on an object.
  • Striking against sports equipment, with subsequent fall.
  • Spacecraft explosion injuring occupant. (This might win for most ridiculously awesome medical code, if survived)
  • Pecked by chicken. (Aaaaand on the other end of the spectrum…)
  • Crushed by alligator.
  • Exposure to sunlight, initial encounter.
  • Volcanic eruption, subsequent encounter.
  • Prolonged stay in weightless environment.
  • Contact with running hot water.
  • Exposure to tanning bed.
  • Balloon collision injuring occupant.
  • Struck by cow.
  • Walked into wall.

Just a reminder, that all of these have codes… so they must have happened multiple times.  Additionally, they all have three levels so if you head to the emergency room for the third time after being crushed by an alligator, there’s a separate code for each incident.  You can view more of these on Browse-a-Code. Most of the interesting ones are in “External Cases of Morbidity.”  I’m starting to think I want a new career as a medical billing specialist.

One of my favorites is Suicide by Bicycle. I’m picturing hordes of people flinging themselves in front of a bicycle race yelling, “Nooo, I don’t want to live any more!”
