If you haven’t noticed I’m kind of a nerd when it comes to National Parks. So I was totally excited to see on my Facebook feed that President Obama has designated FIVE new national monuments:

Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument
First State National Monument
Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument
San Juan Islands National Monument
Río Grande del Norte National Monument

National monuments differ slightly from national parks because it takes an act of congress to create a national park. However, under the Antiquities Act the president has a special ability (I like to think of it as a presidential super power,) to designate national monuments which are overseen by the National Park Service. (Although national monuments do not receive the same funding and level of protection as national parks.)

While national monuments may not sound as grand or glorious as national parks, many national monuments go on to greater things. Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, Petrified Forest National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Channel Islands National Park and the very recently redesignated Pinnacles National Park all started out as National Monuments.

So let’s welcome our five new bouncing baby national monuments!
