Earth Day: Shorter Showers Challenge

I have a confession to make:….*deep breath*…. I take long showers. There, I said it!

I try to be earth friendly. I am a champion recycler. I smugly bring my reusable bags to the grocery store. I pop tags like it’s no one’s business. But I guiltily try to change the subject whenever water use comes up.

When I lived in Ohio it didn’t seem like such a big deal. I lived near Lake Erie and we Ohioans worry far more about water pollution than water scarcity. In Illinois I lived next to a large river. The possibility of not having water when I turned on the tap seemed unlikely. I wish I could say I changed my ways when I moved to California, but I didn’t.

It’s not that I can’t take shorter showers. It’s not that I haven’t tried to either. I have managed to shorten my shower time for a little while but it always creeps back up into the “longer than most geologic ages” zone.

For our month-long celebration of Earth Day we wanted to document some of our own efforts to be more earth friendly. One of my challenges this Earth Day will be reducing my water footprint by taking shorter showers. In later posts I want to explore water footprints and why they matter. I also want to try some mad science to find ways to reduce my shower related water use. And, for better or for worse, at the end of the month I will make y’all hold me accountable by sharing how well I did.

Here goes nothing.
